In Animal Character Illustration, we will focus on creating a single image that expresses personality and suggests a story. Students will learn to anthropomorphize an animal of their choice, giving it the personality traits of people. This is mostly done through facial expression, posture, clothes, and props. We will talk about color schemes: it often works well to limit colors to a few and choose one dominant color. Then, the shapes used to construct the character and scene will establish mood and tone. Circles, squares, triangles each communicate a “shape language” that influences how the viewer sees the illustration. Finally, we will discuss some tips for using watercolor to achieve the best results.
